Surface profile

Determine profile depth for reliable corrosion protection.

The surface profile of the base material influences the performance of a coating and affects the adhesion, hiding power and material consumption. Very smooth surfaces with low profiles are difficult to coat because the coating adheres poorly. Surfaces with high profiles require very thick coatings. Learn how our equipment works to get accurate surface profile information.

This is how the surface profile measurement works.

This is how the surface profile measurement works

Our tactile devices and probes detect a one-dimensional stylus profile. They measure the height differences peak-to-valley in accordance with ASTM 4417, method B. According to this standard, the value for the profile depth is determined by 10 measurements per location/measuring point. Such depth measurements of surface profiles can be used to comply with various regulations and guidelines, such as SSPC PA 17.

Where is this process used?

  • Measuring the surface profile depth
  • Checking whether the surface profile depth is within specifications
  • Examination of blasted surfaces to check whether the surface profile depth is suitable for painting

What factors can influence the measurement?

The operation of the measuring device can influence the measuring. Therefore, you should always make sure that the probe is applied level over the coating and without pressure.

In order to influence the measuring as little as possible, the surface to be tested should also be dry and free of impurities.
